ARPANSA has updated its dental radiation safety guidelines

March 2025: The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) has updated its dental radiation safety guidelines, replacing the 2005 Code (RPS 10) with the new Radiation Protection Series C-7 (RPS C-7).

The national code that ensures radiation safety for patients and workers at dental clinics has been updated following international scientific assessment showing exposures in the dentist’s chair are very low. ARPANSA has published the new radiation protection code for the dental industry following an internal review and stakeholder consultation last year.  ARPANSA regularly reviews and updates its codes to make sure they are aligned with international best practice.

Key Changes for Dental Practices

1. Alignment with International Standards

RPS C-7 aligns with the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) General Safety Requirements Part 3, ensuring that Australia’s practices meet global benchmarks for radiation safety.ARPANSA

2. Emphasis on Justification and Optimization

The new code reinforces the principles of justification (ensuring that the benefits of a radiographic procedure outweigh the risks) and optimization (keeping radiation doses as low as reasonably achievable).

3. Defined Responsibilities for ‘Responsible Persons’

The code specifies the duties of individuals overseeing dental radiation facilities, including ensuring equipment safety, staff training, and compliance with radiation protection measures.

4. Integration with Other ARPANSA Codes

RPS C-7 is designed to be used in conjunction with other ARPANSA codes, such as the Code for Radiation Protection in Planned Exposure Situations (RPS C-1), providing a comprehensive framework for radiation safety.ARPANSA+3ARPANSA+3ARPANSA+3

5. Updated Guidance on Equipment and Procedures

The code includes revised recommendations for dental radiographic equipment, image receptors, and processing techniques to enhance safety and efficacy.ARPANSA

Implementation Steps for Dental Practice Managers:

  1. Review the New Code: Familiarize yourself with RPS C-7 to understand the updated requirements.

  2. Assess Current Practices: Evaluate your existing radiation protection measures against the new standards.consult.arpansa.gov.au

  3. Update Protocols: Revise your procedures and policies to align with RPS C-7.ARPANSA+11ARPANSA+11ARPANSA+11

  4. Train Staff: Ensure all team members are educated on the new guidelines and their responsibilities.

  5. Maintain Documentation: Keep records of compliance, equipment maintenance, and staff training as evidence of adherence to the code.
